Houses in the Bumthang region are often grouped in villages and the habitat is less scattered than in the other regions of Bhutan. The house are solidly built of stones with an upper storey which is the family living area while the ground floor is for animals and storage.

Most of the villages possess a small temple that is looked after by a caretaker coming from one the family and where the annual festival takes place.

Around the villages, there are small squarish constructions, often painted red. They are the lukhang, tsenkhang or neykhang, “palaces” of subterranean and local deities who are worshipped by the villagers for harmony and prosperity.

Prayers-flag are also part of the village landscape and are erected for different religious purposes.
